A coworker of my wife's just had a devastating fire in a townhouse attic that went unnoticed until neighbors were banging on their door. The fire was caused by a short in ceiling light fixture which smoldered for hours in the insulation before spreading. Light fixture had flickered hours earlier.(Seems to be common story according to some Fire Prevention websites that I googled.) The other common place fires start in homes and go unnoticed is the garage.
Atleast for the garage, there seems to be an easy fix, Dupont produces a self charging smoke detector that screws into a light fixture and it is approved for garage use. Testing and resetting false alarms can be done at light switch. Needs only 2 hrs (not continuous) of power over a month to keep it powered. Not sure about attic use, attic heat may be too much. Dupont's website for this product is below and contains link to a online manual. Target sells it online only for $25.99. If you go to target.com (and not Amazon.com portal to Target.com) you get free shipping. Dupont website is:
